About this event

Description: Special Interest Groups (SIGs) offer many opportunities to dig into your genealogy priorities and receive tips on solving research challenges in smaller group settings. You meet members studying similar topical, geographic, or methodological interests. Our current topical SIGs include a Writers’ SIG, an African American Research SIG, and a DNA & AI SIG. Our current geographic SIGs include an Irish SIG, a German SIG, a New England SIG, and a Mid Atlantic SIG (needs a co-leader). Our current methodological SIGs include a Beginners’ SIG. FxGS supports these activities to provide members with more access to resources in a particular area. In this program you’ll have a chance to learn more about our current SIGs as well as talk about flexible ways these SIGs operate, who leads the SIGs, and how to start a new SIG!  We will start with short talks from various SIG leaders.  After the break, you can join small groups of SIG leaders and members for mini-SIG meetings!

SIG Day Coordinators:  Janet Werner and Lea Edwards have organized the SIG Day Program together.  Janet is a professional genealogist, family historian, attorney and writer. She serves on the Board of the Fairfax Genealogical Society (FxGS) and is the current coordinator of the FxGS Genetic Genealogy (DNA) & AI Special Interest Group (SIG), where she makes presentations routinely. Lea has volunteered with the FxGS Education Team for a couple years, which has been working on more ways for members to interact, solve problems, and socialize during our Saturday morning, in person meetings. She manages a Genealogy/AI SIG for the Fairfax County Chapter DAR and co-sponsors with Mike Mason the OLLI-GMU Family History and Genealogy Club.
