Our society could not operate with out the generous contributions of time and talent from our volunteers.

Wherever you are on your genealogical journey, we hope this group will provide the opportunity for us to get to know each other, provide mutual help, encouragement, assistance, advice, and a recognition that we share a common quest.We will be sharing research strategies, activities, problems, and success stories, that are unique to African American history and culture.

The videos and handouts for the January meetings are now posted. Go to the Membership > Members Only page and select "Handouts and Videos" from the left side menu.

Work to compile a list of properties around Virginia that are associated with an instance, reference, or event related to the Underground Railroad, or the general seeking of freedom from bondage.

The theme of the meeting: Researching our Ancestors, will feature a special guest David Nicholson, author of The Garretts of Columbia: A Black South Carolina Family from Slavery to the Dawn of Integration. This a personal multi-generational family story that extends from the slave trade until after WWII.

This month we had a lively discussion covering various topics. From this discussion have come a few interesting topic ideas for future meetings, including navigating various genealogy websites and search engines, how to find records that are not online, reading old German script, performing cemetery analysis to find relationships, genealogy tourism to find new information and sharing research success stories and German family history discovery.
