About the Seminar

Curious about AI and genealogy? Join Steve Little, AI Program Director for the National Genealogical Society and founder of AI Genealogy Insights, to discover practical ways AI can help with records, research, and challenging projects, explore the Genealogical Research Assistant (GRA), and learn why evidence, verification, and your own judgment remain the keys to sound genealogy. for an engaging, approachable exploration of AI and genealogy.

Session 1 — The Future Is Now: Getting Started with AI

Discover how AI can assist with everyday genealogy tasks such as summarizing records, organizing information, and translating text. Learn what AI does well, where caution is needed, and how to get started while keeping your own genealogical judgment in charge.

Session 2 — Think Bigger: What AI Makes Possible: with Steve Little and Janet Hall Werner.

What could you tackle with AI that once seemed too complicated or time-consuming? Steve and Janet share examples from their research, including Janet's one-name study, to show how AI can help compile, organize, and analyze large amounts of information and explore relationships. See what these tools make possible—and where evidence, verification, and human judgment remain essential.

Session 3 — Meet Your Genealogical Research Assistant

Get a guided, hands-on introduction to setting up and using the Genealogical Research Assistant (GRA), a set of instructions designed to help an AI chatbot follow more careful research habits. Try it on a genealogy task while keeping evidence and verification at the center. Follow along on your own computer, work with a partner, or observe. Preparation instructions will be provided in advance. The GRA instructions are free. Any software or account requirements will be explained in the advance preparation materials.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore AI or already putting it to work in your research, this seminar will help you better understand what these tools can—and cannot—do and how to use them thoughtfully and effectively.
